Inspiring Talk by Paralympian Brad Ness at Go West in the Pilbara
Go West staff in the Pilbara had the privilege of hearing firsthand from Australian Basketball Paralympian Brad Ness. Brad shared his powerful story and insights into workplace safety, drawing from his own experience of a life-changing accident.
At just 18 years old, Brad suffered a severe workplace accident while working as a deckhand on a ferry bound for Rottnest Island. A rope tightened around his right ankle, resulting in a below-the-knee amputation. Despite this tragic event, Brad went on to become a five-time Paralympian and the captain of the Australian Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team. Brad uses his platform to advocate for occupational health and safety, helping companies and employees adopt best practices to ensure a safer work environment.
The idea to invite Brad came from Go West Tours Shutdown Manager Mel Macnish, who was working in the ferry company's office when Brad's accident occurred. Mel vividly recalls the day and the profound impact it had on everyone involved. “The accident really affected Brad, his family, and everyone in the workplace. It underscored the importance of managing fatigue and ensuring clear communication in the workplace,” Mel said.
During his talk, Brad covered key topics such as workplace safety, culture change, risk management, motivation, inclusivity, achieving goals, and mentoring. His message resonated deeply with the staff, emphasising the critical importance of a proactive safety culture.
General Manager Brad Bunce highlighted the significance of Brad’s presentation as part of Go West's "What We Do Different" safety campaign. This initiative aims to continuously improve workplace culture and reduce incidents, reinforcing the company's commitment to safety and well-being.
Brad Ness's visit was an inspiring reminder of the importance of safety and resilience in the workplace, and his message will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on all who attended.
