Meet Liz - Empowering Women in Transport
A career in recruitment wasn’t always part of the plan, but for Swan Transit's Recruitment Officer, the journey into the role has been one of unexpected growth and fulfilment. Initially applying for an administration position, she never imagined she would become such an integral part of helping others begin their own careers.
Her natural ability to connect with people and the encouragement of supportive colleagues led her to apply for the Recruitment Officer position when it became available. Despite doubts about her experience, she embraced the challenge — and hasn’t looked back since.
A Passion for People
Every day, the Recruitment Officer works closely with admin teams, trainers, depot coordinators, and managers to meet each depot’s hiring needs. From conducting background checks, interviews, and pre-employment assessments to scheduling medical examinations and supporting new starters through onboarding — she is there every step of the way.
Her passion lies in helping candidates navigate the application process and finding people who will make a positive contribution to the business. “Seeing a candidate I’ve helped all the way through proudly wearing their uniform makes me very happy. It’s really humbling.”
Empowering Women in Transport
The transport industry has long been male-dominated, but the supportive culture at Swan Transit has made the journey easier to navigate. However, the Recruitment Officer recognises there is still work to be done.
“Some of the people I interview come from backgrounds where women aren’t always valued equally. I believe I can help promote a culture of acceptance by giving opportunities to candidates who share our values.”
Working alongside inspiring women within the company has been one of the most rewarding parts of her journey. “It’s been a huge blessing to have such amazing women mentoring me along the way.”
Celebrating Women Everywhere
For the Recruitment Officer, National Women’s Day is about honouring women across the globe — regardless of their background. “It’s about looking to strong women who inspire others and lift them up.”
Among her own inspirations are her mother and Deborra-Lee Furness, whose advocacy for children’s rights has left a lasting impression.
Proud Achievements
Balancing work, study, and motherhood hasn’t always been easy — but earning a Certificate IV in Human Resources stands out as one of her proudest achievements. As a mother of two teenagers, she wanted to show them that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.
“They were greatly inspired to persevere in their coursework as a result — that made all the hard work worthwhile.”
A Vision for the Future
Having returned to the workforce after eight years as a stay-at-home mum, she’s seen firsthand how much the workplace has evolved — but there’s still more to be done.
“All of our area managers and operations managers are currently men, but I hope to see more women in leadership positions in the not-so-distant future.”
With dedication, passion, and a commitment to uplifting others, she’s helping pave the way for more women to step into roles across the transport industry — and shaping a more inclusive future for everyone.
