Kowanyama State School students rewarded with North Stradbroke Island experience during NAIDOC week

North Stradbroke Island Buses and SeaLink South East Queensland welcomed 10 Kowanyama State School students to North Stradbroke Island during NAIDOC week - a celebratory trip earned in recognition of exceptional commitment to education and learning.

Michael McGee CEO of Transit Systems, which operates North Stradbroke Island Buses, said the students scored an amazing day out in honour of their strong attendance records and upholding the school's values.

“The students earned this trip as a reward for their hard work, and we wanted to help make this experience as memorable and inspiring as possible by welcoming them to North Stradbroke Island,” he said.

The students jumped onboard the brand new North Stradbroke Island State School bus, which was unveiled earlier this year, and went to the gorge for a spot of whale watching, Amity Point for a swim and of course the Gelati shop for a sweet treat.

SeaLink SEQ provided the return ferry fares, and a souvenir pack for each of the students, including some “I Love Straddie” merchandise and snacks, with General Manager Ben Renwick saying he was proud to host the students.

“Congratulations to the students for their achievements and also to their teachers and mentors for creating a love of learning. We were thrilled to welcome the Kowanyama students onboard and showcase the wonders of North Stradbroke Island, with its significant First Nations culture,” he said.

Kowanyama lies on the west coast of Cape York, 600 kilometres northwest of Cairns. Kowanyama means “place of many waters” in the Yir Yoront language. The community includes the Kokoberra, Yir Yoront [or Kokomenjen] and Kunjen clans, who each have language and other cultural differences.
