Transit Systems and WomenCAN Australia have joined forces to empower women through gaining employment and training to become bus drivers. This initiative reflected both organisations' shared commitment to providing opportunities and supporting women to excel in industries where they are underrepresented.

Through this partnership, four women jumped on board with Transit Systems, where they received extensive support to become licenced bus drivers. The program began with comprehensive training that included the transition from a C-class driver’s license to a Heavy Rigid (HR) bus licence.

Ann Smith, Acting CEO of WomenCAN Australia, says, “At WomenCAN Australia, we are passionate about empowering women to secure dignified, meaningful and sustainable employment. We are dedicated to breaking down barriers in male-dominated fields, creating pathways for greater inclusivity and opportunity.”

“It was an absolute privilege to assist women in rebuilding their confidence, connections and work capability. This not only benefits the women, but also their families and the communities they live in.” Ann said.

WomenCAN Australia is committed to supporting women with limited workplace experience due to caregiving responsibilities or economic exclusion. Their programs offer opportunities in Bus Driving, Warehousing, Heavy Vehicle Transport, Aged Care, and Childcare, enabling women to make a positive impact on their families and communities through meaningful employment.

In preparation for their interview with Transit Systems Victoria, the four participants, Annette, Biftu, Souzet and Sarah, received work readiness training, resume writing assistance, interview techniques and confidence-building support from the WomenCAN Australia team.

Annette, says, “I am from Uganda Africa and a young mum of young school-aged children. I have struggled to navigate the Australian workplace and employment options for myself. WomenCAN Australia gave me the confidence and support I needed to take on a new challenge in my career. Preparing for the bus driver interview with Transit Systems, I felt very nervous and filled with anxiety but with the support and guidance from WomenCAN Australia and the team at Transit Systems, I felt empowered, knowing I had a team behind me that believed in my potential. They helped me refine my interview skills and reminded me that, as a woman, I can excel in any industry.”

Biftu says, “Thanks to the support from WomenCAN Australia, I felt confident and prepared walking into my bus driver interview with Transit Systems. They not only helped me refine my skills but also empowered me to believe in myself every step of the way.”

“As a Muslim woman who has newly arrived in Australia, entering a traditionally male-dominated field, having WomenCAN Australia and Transit Systems support was life-changing. Their support transformed my nervousness into excitement, and now I’m ready to hit the road and drive towards a brighter future and I hope to inspire other women.” Sarah says.

The collaboration between Transit Systems and WomenCAN Australia provides a unique blend of training, real-world experience and emotional support, ensuring that participants are equipped to take on new challenges and succeed in their careers.

John Storms, Managing Director, Transit Systems Victoria, says, “We’re thrilled to welcome these four amazing women into our team. This partnership is all about helping women build the confidence, skills and support they need to thrive in our industry. We look forward to seeing their growth and contribution to the community.”
