Claire’s Journey: From fleet manager to trailblazing bus driver

After 34 years in a government position, 61-year-old Claire decided it was time for a new adventure. With her love for driving and hunger for something different, she found the perfect fit to become a bus driver – a career move that inspired her and set a shining example for others.

Claire's decision wasn't just a leap of faith; it was a leap into a whole new world, supported by the transformative experience of the Transit Academy. The academy's tailored training gave her the confidence and knowledge to navigate her new role with skill and poise. Over three intensive weeks, Claire moved from classroom learning to hands-on driving with a trainer before spending her final week paired with a buddy driver. This comprehensive training equipped her with technical skills and gave her the assurance to take the wheel and thrive.

"Having trained drivers myself in my previous role, I have a deep respect for the trainers at the academy. They do an amazing job and were key in helping me transition to this new chapter," Claire shared.

One of the highlights of her new career is the shift work, which she finds both flexible and exciting. Meeting new people daily and exchanging smiles and stories fuels her enthusiasm for the job.

What truly sets Claire apart is her hope to inspire others. As part of the LGBTIQ+ community and having been with her partner for over 30 years, Claire knows the importance of representation. She's proud to show that inclusivity and diversity belong in every workplace, including the driver's seat.

Claire often receives compliments from passengers who wish for more female drivers – a sentiment she hopes will encourage other women to join the industry. "If I can lead by example, I'd love to see more women take on this role. Driving a bus is empowering, and the journey is worth it," she said.

Claire's story serves as a reminder that it's never too late to embrace change, pursue a passion, or pave the way for others. With Claire behind the wheel, the road ahead looks bright for a more inclusive and diverse future in public transport.
